The College of Information Technical Science,made up of Department of Computer and System Science,Department of Electronic Science,Insitute of Modern Optics,Institute of Photo electronic Thin Film Device and Technology,and Institute of Machine Intelligence,was set up in 1995.An excellent faculty engaging in major disciplines of information science has emerged after reconstruction of the departments or institutes such as computer ,optics, Optics & Opto-electronics ,communication,microelectronics and automation.The college consists of 7 departments , 4 institutes ,and Teaching Division of Basic Computer Science and Basic Lab center.The college can offer 9 undergraduate programs,17 graduate programs, 7 doctoral programs (including a first-class discipline for doctorate)and 3 postdoctoral programs.Among them Specialty of Optical Engineering is one of the National Key disciplines, and Specialty of Computer Software and Theory is one of the Tianjin Key disciplines.The college has equipped with advanced basic and special-teaching labs, and research labs.Among them there are"The Key Laboratory of Opto-electronic Information science and Technology, MEC",the "Internet open lad of Machine Intelligence control theory and method research" belonging to National Science Committee 863 Plan and "Tianjin research center of ICdesign". The staff are engaged in 7 first-class disciplines promulgated by the Degree Office of State Council in 1997.So the college is one of the information colleges with the widest coverage of disciplines in China .Through hard work,the college has made great achievement in teaching ,research and subject construction and has primarily formed complete subject variety ,vivid teaching feature ,outstanding research achievement and super-qualified student training in order to meet the need of high-qualified,high-level,and top-creation people in 21st century information and technology world.The first dean of the college was professor Qin Shicai,the second dean was professor Lu Guizhang,and the third is professor Wu Gongyi.
Professor Mu Guoguang is a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, fellow of Third World Academy of Sciences,chairman of Academic Committee of Nankai University, dean of Institute of Modern Optics,president of Chinese Optical Society,fellow of both Optical Society of America (OSA) and International Optical Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE),ex-president of Nankai University and ex-vice-president of Internatonal Commission of Optics (ICO).
Now the college has 135 full-time faculty members, including one academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 64 professors, (among them 42 are supervisors), 51 associate professors and 2 appointed posts of Yangzi Scholar, which constitute high academic level, reasonable structure and strong faculty of the combination between the middle-aged and the youth. The college also invited many famous domestic and international experts and scholars as guest professors, or part-time professors, including professor Yang Zhenhuan, Pennsylvania State University of USA; professor Yan Songyuan, Aston University of Britain; professor Chen Ruiliang, Laval Quebec University of Canada; president Qin Mu Li Qing, NTT Corporation of Japan; professor Hiloma,Hamamatsu Photonics Limited Company,; professor Xia Changtian,California University of USA; professor Cheng Hengda, Utah State University of USA; professor Shen Changxiang, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Research Manager Researcher Zhang Yi zhao, Project Leader Microsoft Research, China; Professor Cai Xiaoqiang,Chinese University of Hong Kong; Professor Chen Guanrong, City University of Hong Kong; Professor Guo Haicheng, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Research Professor Lv Shuwang, member of Chinese Academy of Science and so on.
Now the college has more than 1,600 undergraduates, 700 PhD students and MSc students. At the same time, it also enrolls students for different kinds of adult education. The college inherits the good education tradition of Nan-kai University and pays special attention to teaching and educating of students. In accordance with the CPC education principle, it insists on the teaching thoughts,"focus on the basic knowledge,wide vision,impro-vement quality".By doing this, it deepens education reformation. The college betters the teaching methods and renew the teaching contents to emphasize the importance of basic teaching, it strengthens the eng-ineering training to improve studen-ts' practical ability, and it starts from the in-class teaching, special labs, academic activity and social practice to display the college's teaching characteristics and the systematic and advanced class curriculum. All the college teachers and students work together to build serious and creative study atmosphere. Every year, the college has trained for the country many qualified students with good basic and special mathematic and physic knowledge, and good practical ability. The our graduates are quite popular in the society, most of them teach, or do research, or work in universities,research institutes, big domestic companies and foreign companies. Some of them further their study as postgraduates or study abroad.
The college pays special att-ention to the scientific research by supporting and organizing all the teachers and researchers to report research projects, and it also str-engthens the management of each research work. Since the esta-blishment of this college, it has undertaken more than 570 scientific research projects, including National Natural Science Funds, National 863 Plan, 973 Plan 9th Five-Year Plan and so on. Altogether,there are about 200 national key projects and provincial or ministerial level projects. And the teachers have published more than 2000 theses in domestic and inter-national academic magazines and academic conference. Many of theses have been cataloged in SCI, ET, and ISTP, More than one hundred books, translated books and textbooks ha-ve been formally published. The college has received more than 10 awards, such as National Science Progressive Award, National Science Invention Award,The Great Achie-vement Award of National 7th Five-Year Plan period, Technology Pro-gressive Award of Ministry of Education and so on. And at the same time, the college has made great progress in transferring the scientific achievement into practical use. Some have been commerciali-zed at home and abroad.
The college has extensive and close ties with domestic and foreign institutions, and has established extensive academic communication and cooperation relationship with many universities, research institute, informational technique company in America, England, Japan, French, Germany,Singapore and Taiwan. Every year, the college will invite well-known experts and scholars to give speech to the students. And it will also regularly send teachers to visit other countres,enter international academic conference, to further study, or for short time or for degree. Communication and cooperation help the college establish excellent academic atmosphere, and help the teachers and students understand and get touch with the latest deve-lopment in the world, broaden their vision,and force the college to develop its teaching and research level.
Nowadays, the college inherits the university motto "dedication to public interests, acquisition of all-round capability,aspiration for progress with each passing day", catches the opportunities to develop the comprehensive advantages, emphasizes the key subject, sup-ports the development of new and interdisciplinary subjects, and tries to form the Nankai University Information Science and Technology education system with moderate scope, particular feature, first-class education level. The college wants to become the teaching and research base to create high-level information technology and train capable people for Tianjin city and China.
